Characters

The comedy of character, rather than relying on a comic situation—though the two are not mutually exclusive—is primarily based on the humorous characterisation of the characters and the comedy that arises from the improbable encounter of extreme and utterly opposing personalities. Molière remains the undisputed master of the comedy of character (The Misanthrope, The Miser, The Imaginary Invalid…).

In the comedy of character, instead of an extraordinary situation, it is the confrontation between incompatible characters that creates an explosive and thus comical dynamic. From Don Quixote and Sancho Panza to Laurel and Hardy, comic duos always rely on a contrast of personalities (often coupled with a physical contrast).
