Manners

The comedy of manners satirizes the extravagant and hypocritical flaws of contemporary society in general or of a particular social group. It asserts a moral judgment against the behaviors it ridicules in order to condemn them. While the comedy of character mocks individual flaws (e.g., The Miser), the comedy of manners targets social deviations (e.g., The Learned Ladies). This is why the comedy of character tends to be timeless, whereas the comedy of manners is more rooted in a specific era.
