Suite à un accident de vélo bleu, Patrick se retrouve plongé dans un coma profond entouré d’un frère, d’une soeur et… d’une drôle d’épouse.
Le médecin et son assistante sont formels, le pronostic vital est engagé; ses proches doivent rapidement décider du sort de Patrick mais, avec l’arrivée de la police, la décision s’avère plus difficile à prendre encore !

Pour inciter un ministre à signer un gros contrat lors d’un dîner, un PDG a engagé une escorte pour jouer la carte « séduction ». Mais l’escorte en question ne fait que remplacer une amie et cette dernière ne lui a parlé que d’un travail d’hôtesse très bien payé…  Elle pense servir les plats alors qu’elle figure au menu !

Mise en scène : le texte ne se satisfait que de fidélités multiples

Il m’arrive souvent d’assister aux spectacles des compagnies qui me font l’honneur de monter mes pièces. À l’issue de ces représentations, la même question revient régulièrement : Est-ce comme cela que vous imaginiez la mise en scène de votre comédie ? Une interrogation fort louable dans la mesure où elle témoigne d’une grande considération pour le travail d’écriture. Cependant, si un auteur attend bien sûr a minima que le metteur en scène et les comédiens respectent l’architecture de son œuvre, en se gardant des incohérences qui nuiraient à son équilibre, son plus grand plaisir est qu’on le surprenne à avec un parti pris nouveau, qui lui montre que cette œuvre est susceptible d’inspirer de multiples interprétations, prouvant ainsi sa richesse et sa complexité. Merci donc à toutes les compagnies qui font vivre mes textes, chacune à leur façon, me permettant ainsi d’explorer à chaque fois une facette nouvelle de mon écriture.

Jean-Pierre Martinez is a French playwright and scriptwriter. Born in 1955 in Auvers-sur-Oise (France). He has written 107 comedies, several of which have been translated in English. Jean-Pierre Martinez first got a taste of stage performance as a drummer in various rock bands, before becoming a semiologist in the field of advertising. Later, he worked as television scriptwriter and returned to the stage as a playwright. Today, he is among the most played contemporary playwrights in France, and several of his plays have already been translated in Spanish and English. He graduated in Spanish and English literature (Sorbonne), linguistics (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales), economics (Institut d’Études Politique de Paris) and scriptwriting (Conservatoire Européen d’Ecriture Audiovisuelle). Entrevista a Jean-Pierre Martinez

1. Jean-Pierre, para empezar, me gustaría  que nos hablaras de tus primeros recuerdos relacionados con la escritura, y si estas vivencias fueron o no decisivas para trazar tu profesión.

Primero, Julio, me permitirás notar algo muy significativo: nunca nos hemos encontrado todavía tú y yo. Ni hemos hablado junto por teléfono. Yo solo te conozco a través de tus obras teatrales. Y tú a mí a través de mis propios escritos. Así que desde el principio, la escritura queda muy al centro de nuestro encuentro. Un encuentro literario. Para contestar tu pregunta, creo que he de decirte que me sentí escritor antes de escribir. Antes de saber si era capaz de escribir algo. Y antes de saber que podía escribir. Eso es lo que recuerdo. Así como unas primeras líneas de una novela que de niño nunca continué y un teatro de títeres que construí en una caja de cartón (el escenario, claro). Quería ser escritor. Me costó unos cuarenta años atreverme a serlo. Todavía no sé si me lo otorgo…

2. Llegas al teatro a través de la escritura para cine –corrígeme si me equivoco-. ¿En qué medida lo cinematográfico ha influido en tu estilo?

Te corrijo, Julio, ya que me lo has autorizado: Llegué a la escritura para el teatro a través de la escritura para la televisión. Y llegué a la escritura para la televisión gracias a la traducción (del inglés al francés) de novelas sentimentales… Como te decía, fue poco a poco que acepté escribir algo que no fuera puramente comercial. En primer lugar por razones económicas (uno tiene que ganarse la vida) pero también por culpa de una educación judeo-cristiana: Sólo me autorizaba escribir si, haciendo esto, me podía ganar la vida. Además, ganarme la vida escribiendo obras comerciales me permitía no hacer otra cosa todavía más aburrida. Escribiendo obras comerciales aprendí técnicas de escritura que me ayudaron a escribir obras más personales. Para contestar más precisamente a tu pregunta, queda muy claro que hay algo en común entre la escritura audiovisual (sea para la tele o el cine) y la escritura teatral, como principalmente la necesidad de pensar en términos de situaciones y de imágenes. Con la diferencia, a mi parecer, que en el teatro, vista la necesaria economía de medios, has de focalizar los personajes. Y el subtexto. Lo que más importa en el teatro es lo que no se dice…

3. Al terminar de leer alguna de tus obras, como es el caso de Strip-Póker, he tenido la tentación de dibujar tus personajes, llevar a la caricatura lo que en cierta forma queda esbozado en la pieza. ¿Hasta qué punto confías en la creación de tus propios personajes? ¿Existe una deliberada intención de ambigüedad?

Mira, Julio, aquí tocas a una contradicción fundamental de la comedia: para que podamos reírnos de los personajes de comedia (como los de Molière) y de las desgracias que les acontecen, tienen que ser caricaturables y en consecuencia detestables. Por otro lado, para que el público se pueda identificar con estos personajes, han de permanecer humanos, es decir: ambiguos, complejos y frágiles. El espectador tiene que amar y detestar a esos personajes, que en cierta manera nos representan a todos. No estoy muy lejos de pensar que ocurre lo mismo en relación a los personajes de tragedia, pero al revés: el espectador los detesta amándolos… Así que, en consecuencia, la intención de ambigüedad es deliberada. No sólo en los personajes (¿Quién es, de verdad?), sino incluso en lo que se refiere a las situaciones (¿Que pasó, realmente?). Además, para un autor, sería muy aburrido ir a ver sus obras representadas si hubiera sólo una lectura posible. A mí me gusta que me sorprenda una escenografía, por ejemplo…

4. Háblame del humor, de su necesidad, de los mecanismos que lo desencadenan y si es deliberado que el humor ocupe en tus obras un lugar central.

Se dice que el humor es la cortesía de la desesperación. Yo solo me otorgo el humor…

5. ¿Te sitúas dentro de una corriente de renovación del absurdo?

Sería tener muy poco sentido del humor y mucha pretensión contestarte que sí… En serio (tratándose de humor), mi propósito no es renovar a nada (sino a mí mismo quizás, que ya sería mucho). Sólo intento expresar un universo personal. Hacer reír a los demás. Y sobre todo reírme de mi mismo…

6. ¿Te has sentido horrorizado alguna vez después de ver una puesta en escena de una de tus obras?

Si. La primera. Después me acostumbré…

7. ¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre determinadas formas teatrales postdramáticas en las que el texto queda en un segundo término (tal y como ocurría en las apuestas escénicas de los 60 y 70).

Como autor, pero todavía más como espectador, pienso que nunca el texto debe ser un pretexto. Dar a entender una interpretación clara de una obra ambigua ya es mucho ¿No?

8. ¿Qué lecturas son las que te enganchan?

“La carne es triste, y leí todos los libros” dijo Mallarme… Yo no leí todos los libros, claro. Pero leí muchos. Y cuando empecé a escribir, dejé de leer, sino el periódico (y últimamente una obra no publicada de un tal Julio Fernández que se titula La Muerte es Breve). Leer ya no me engancha, sino que me paraliza. No te sabría explicar por qué…

9. Cuéntame cómo es París.

¿A parte de que es la ciudad más bonita del mundo después de Vigo? Pues en París hay muchos teatros. Pero muy pocas comedias buenas. Lamento que sea así. Que el humor se confunda con el ridículo. Volviendo al absurdo, el año pasado, una de mis obras, “Photo de Famille”,  fue leída en el Teatro de La Huchette, donde se estrenaron medio siglo atrás las obras de Ionesco, y donde están todavía representadas cada día. Fue muy emocionante para mí. Tienes razón, Julio: ¡Tú y yo tenemos que renovar el absurdo!

10. ¿Qué escribes ahora?

Ahora, te estoy escribiendo, Julio. Y tus preguntas me han enseñado unas cosas sobre mí mismo que no sabía todavía… Así que te lo agradezco.

Jean-Pierre Martinez es autor teatral y guionista francés de origen español. Nacido en 1955 en Auvers-sur-Oise, sube al escenario primero como baterista en diversos grupos de rock, antes de hacerse semiólogo para la publicidad. Luego trabaja como guionista para la televisión, y vuelve al teatro como autor. Ha escrito más de 100 guiones para distintas series de la televisión francesa, y otras tantas comedias para el teatro (13 y Martes, Strip Poker, Ella y Él, Un Pequeño Asesinato sin Consecuencias, El Último Cartucho…). Actualmente es uno de los autores contemporáneos más representados en Francia, y varias de sus obras han sido ya traducidas en español, en portugués, en inglés, así como en más de diez otros idiomas.

A lo largo de las más de 100 comedias que ha escrito hasta la fecha, Jean-Pierre Martinez teje la trama de un universo teatral singular, donde el humor, siempre presente, se codea a menudo con el absurdo en sus vertientes tragicómicas. Defiende un teatro popular en el sentido noble del término, entretenido pero sin facilidad, impertinente pero sin vulgaridad, comprometido pero no edificante, ético más que moralista.

Jean-Pierre Martinez es licenciado en literatura española e inglesa (Sorbonne), en lingüística (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales), en economía (Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris), en escritura de guiones (Conservatoire Européen d’Ecriture Audiovisuelle).

Revanche d’un déserteur de l’Institution Théâtrale

Je viens de recevoir non pas mes papiers militaires, comme disait Vian, mais mon bordereau mensuel de la SACD. Pour un seul mois, 15 montages professionnels ou amateurs, en France et en Espagne, portant sur 11 comédies différentes, pour un total de 61 représentations ! Et enfin un vrai revenu d’auteur de théâtre à la clef. Je commence à recueillir les fruits des dix dernières années que j’ai consacrées à l’écriture de mes 46 pièces, et me vois conforté dans le choix que j’ai fait il y a peu de ne plus écrire que pour le théâtre, sans pour autant mettre moi-même en scène mes propres pièces. Ce succès, certifié sans additifs, sans copinage, sans « aides à l’écriture », sans « Prix Beaumarchais », sans l’aval d’aucun « comité de lecture » et sans éditeur, je le dois uniquement à toutes les compagnies amateurs et professionnelles qui, ayant pu télécharger librement mes textes sur mon site La Comédiathèque, les ont assez appréciés pour passer quelques mois à les monter et à les jouer, j’espère avec quelque bonheur et autres moments de joie et de fous rires partagés. Que toutes ces compagnies, à qui j’ai décidé il y a quelques années de m’adresser directement, sans l’aval de l’Institution Théâtrale, soient ici remerciées ! C’est vous qui faites vivre le théâtre mois après mois. Et vous êtes seules à décider de ce que vous avez ou non envie de jouer et de montrer à votre public. Vive le spectacle vivant. Et vive la liberté d’écrire pour les compagnies et pour le public, sans avoir à se préoccuper, comme je l’ai entendu un jour, de l’idée que se fait l’Institution Théâtrale de ce que doit être le théâtre d’aujourd’hui.
